Mount Crested Butte

Galloway’s survey team collaborated with staff from the Town of Mt. Crested Butte, Colorado to provide an extensive survey for the ongoing development on the north side of town. The Town’s current sanitary system needs updates to support future development.

Most of the sanitary lines were installed before the development of the town, and buildings and roads were constructed over them. As a result, the town did not have accurate maps showing the locations of the sanitary and storm lines. Utilizing GPS, robotic total stations, and ground-based terrestrial scanning, Galloway’s survey team located the sanitary line, which extended 2.16 miles from the southern treatment plant to the northern public works building and zigzagged under the main road (Gothic Road).

With elevations ranging from 9,100 ft to 9,600 ft, the survey took place over the course of three months. The surveys measured the length of the sanitary line along with an additional 50 ft of survey area on each side, totaling 26.18 acres. This allowed HDR’s civil team to analyze the terrain and depth of the line for cross-section evaluation and potential redesign.

Our team also conducted a best-fit analysis of the right-of-way line to properly align it with the sanitary and storm lines. To conduct this analysis, our team performed boundary reconnaissance and manually walked the site to locate manholes and utilities, determining the alignment and depth of the sanitary and storm lines. The boundary reconnaissance extended along the sides of the mountain, where Public Land Survey System monuments from the late 1800s were discovered.

In addition to the ground survey work, our survey team provided a topographic survey and aerial imagery using a Mavic 3E drone, allowing the client to view the physical features of the site beyond the 26.18-acre survey area to support a comprehensive analysis for a solution.
