Davis Technical College (DTC) – Freeport Center D5

The State of Utah acquired the D5 Building in the Clearfield Freeport Center. DTC needed to develop a satellite teaching and lab facility in the south quarter of the building.

The core of the program was:

• To develop a lab area that could house a composites laboratory and other smaller teaching labs in an open floor area
• Classrooms were required to augment the lab spaces
• Following a collaborative model, a commons area was developed for study, refreshments, and interaction
• Interspersed along the common area are instructor’s offices and administrative support
• Small collaborative conference areas are also available

In line with the DTC’s vision to reach out and develop program specific to workforce needs, the Technical College wanted to develop a presence and signature on this facility so it was specifically recognizable to students and the business community.

The facility is listed as a building of historical significance. The design had to meet specific requirements of the Federal Government with regard to preservation while providing an identifying entry. During construction, which involved a complete seismic upgrade, several unknown conditions in the construction of the facility were uncovered. The design team worked closely with the contractor and the campus to provide solutions that were cost effective and were easily implemented.
