The Sophia Apartments

The Sophia Apartments is an age-restricted (55+) affordable apartment complex in Englewood, Colorado. The six-story, 153,200 sf building comprises 158 one- and two-bedroom units.

This community qualifies for the 2020 Enterprise Green Communities Certificate (EGCC), an initiative that aligns affordable housing investment strategies with environmentally responsive building practices. The criteria to achieve an EGCC include having an integrative design, sensitive site protection, environmental remediation, water-conserving fixtures, building performance standards, full disclosure of content and known hazards for products, radon mitigation, a healthy living environment, and more.

A key focus of the landscape architecture was accessibility—creating a relaxed, walkable environment with convenient and flexible outdoor recreation and gathering areas. Galloway designed passive outdoor spaces that include fire pit seating, outdoor BBQ areas, and open lawns with seating for both private and small group gatherings.

Despite its location near a busy roadway in a developed area, the site design achieves a sense of intimacy and privacy through thoughtful site organization and space planning. By closely collaborating with the client, we created a flexible, user-centered space that aligns with their vision.
