The Citadel on Colfax

The Citadel on Colfax is a 29.1-acre mixed-use infill development in Aurora, Colorado, located just east of the Fitzsimons Veterans Administration Hospital. Galloway has been working with the master developer to create a unique and flexible development that can support a variety of uses, including retail, medical, office, supportive housing, and single-family residential.

The landscape architecture design is a key element in the organization of the site, providing a meandering trail and associated park spaces that weave together the various uses of the development. Galloway worked with both the master developer and the City of Aurora to develop the site’s open space plan. This plan offers recreational amenities, a central community gathering space called ‘Central Park,’ and smaller pocket parks for the residents of this new neighborhood on Colfax.

The Granby Ditch is an unimproved historic overflow from the High Line Canal that was transformed into a major drainageway as Aurora developed around it. To better accommodate the development and improve the ditch into a stable, defined drainageway, the Granby Ditch was realigned through the site. Although part of the larger private project, the Granby Ditch facility is owned and maintained by the City of Aurora and is eligible for maintenance by the Mile High Flood District. The City of Aurora was integral in the scope and design of this realignment. The project also installed storm sewer inlets and pipes within the roadways.

In addition to providing services for the entire Citadel site, Galloway is also providing services for individual pad sites within the Citadel development, such as the Citadel townhomes, the storage facility, the Dutch Bros, and the Murphy gas station.
