Galloway partnered with Balfour Beatty Communities Group to design a family housing development at Fort Leonard Wood, specifically tailored for enlisted junior non-commissioned officers (NCOs) and their families. This project features the addition of 56 thoughtfully designed three- and four-bedroom duplex homes, each with a two-car garage.
A notable challenge was accommodating the Army’s need for 56 homes without expanding beyond the existing footprint, which contains 30 single-family detached homes. Galloway proposed the solution to build duplexes, effectively nearly doubling housing capacity. The new homes were also integrated into the existing roadways and infrastructure. This approach optimizes the use of space, fosters community, and provides family-friendly neighborhoods for the enlisted families.
To create a cohesive visual identity that respects the community’s heritage, the design of the new duplexes aligns with the existing 30 single-family homes developed by the same Galloway design team 14 years ago. Our design team effectively addressed the need to adapt the project to meet the Army’s requirement for 5% of the homes to be designated as Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) accessible facilities. The new homes are also LEED Silver Certified, making them the most energy-efficient residences on base.
This project marks an important milestone in addressing the housing needs of enlisted Army families at Fort Leonard Wood. By constructing new homes designed for junior non-commissioned officer (NCO) families, the Army confirms its attention to the need and demonstrates its commitment to meeting current and future housing requirements.
