Galloway provided traffic engineering services for the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus (IFMC) in Fairfax County, Virginia, one of eight Inova sites supported by our staff. This project focused on improving the hospital campus user experience by enhancing parking safety, efficiency, and availability. The work was initiated due to parking constraints caused by construction of the new pediatric emergency department. The scope expanded to a comprehensive campus-wide parking evaluation and recommendations for future parking management, as well as coordinating with VDOT staff on recommended signal timing improvements to better handle peak shift‑change traffic accessing the site.
Our process involved extensive field reconnaissance and detailed multi-day parking demand data collection. This data was used to create a microsimulation, analyzed, and then clearly communicated to Inova staff and stakeholders. Leveraging deep site-specific experience, the Galloway team analyzed parking and traffic issues, offering practical, viable solutions beyond just the numbers. We effectively communicated findings and recommendations to diverse stakeholders, navigating competing priorities to deliver a scope addressing most concerns, with acknowledgment of future evaluation and phased implementation.
Services included:
- Campus-wide parking evaluation
